Nook vs Kindle - The Nook Goes Colored

The Nook gets a colored touchscreen to make it better for everyone

In the Nook vs Kindle debate, the Barnes and Noble Nook was doing well, but it was definitely the underdog. With a 20% share in the eReader market, the Nook was facing an uphill battle to beat out the Amazon Kindle. However, Barnes and Noble recently made an ambitious step to change the game, introducing the Nook Color onto the market.

The Nook Color opts out of using eInk, instead, using a touchscreen lcd display that allows books to be displayed in rich color. In addition, the touch features allow more interactivity with books. The best news? Barnes & Noble has made both of these features well-utilized assets, making it more than just a gimmick.

With these new features, the Nook Color now targets several markets much more aggressively. With its rich color features, you are now able to use periodicals to much greater effect. Magazines are fun to read as you can enjoy the full experience. What's more, childrens books are perfect thanks to the lovely colors. Barnes & Noble went further though than just allowing childrens books to be pretty. These books also have the ability to have children touch features to see them come to life, and a "read to me" feature in which the story will be read to the child.

Praise for this new release has been pervasive. Priced at $250, the eReader has moved away from the Kindle comparisons and now sits somewhere between the Kindle and the iPad. It features more multimedia features than the Kindle, at only a slightly higher price. You can read a full review on the Nook Color at Engadget. We have also embedded a video review they offered to give you a more intimate look at the device.

Released in December 2010, it will be interesting to see how the Nook Color does. If you have the opportunity to try one out, please let us know what you think of it and we will gladly share your thoughts with the community.
